Some people will stay in their home having a halloween party while others will take to the streets to “trick or treat”.   If you are having a party you will need halloween decorations to set the mood. You may also invest in some halloween props such as the odd broomstick and perhaps a wreath.  You will have put a lot of effort into thinking up halloween costume ideas whether you made them yourself or bought them.

Some people have wondered about the history of Halloween. The festival name was introduced by the Roman Catholic Church.  It means “All Hallows’ Eve” and is the night before all Saints day.  But the actual traditions probably existed long before organized religion.  For example in ancient Ireland, bonfires were often lit to give the sun strength during the Winter months. People used to sit around these fires telling ghost stories not only scaring the kids but some of the adults as well.  They offered up food to the good spirits and had various ways of chasing away the bad ones – this usually involved dancing and singing.  One tradition was to dress up in masks in the hope that you would make the bad spirits believe you were one of them and they would then let you lead them away from the village.

The Irish took their traditions with them when they moved to America as did the African slaves. The celebrations we hold on the 31 October are a mismatch of all sorts of old celtic, African and traditions from other cultures.  Some people will use this time not just to party but also to remember their dead and will visit graves and light candles.

Kids the world over love this celebration as they generally get to dress up in cute kids halloween costumes and eat all of their favorite foods.

They love the lit pumpkins and while halloween movies may be a little too scary for them, they will actually like being a little bit frightened by scary masks or games.
