One tradition was to dress up in masks in the hope that you would make the bad spirits believe you were one of them and they would then let you lead them away from the village.
The Irish took their traditions with them when they moved to America as did the African slaves. The celebrations we hold on the 31 October are a mismatch of all sorts of old celtic, African and traditions from other cultures. Some people will use this time not just to party but also to remember their dead and will visit graves and light candles.
